Boiler Not Working? A Belfast Homeowner's Troubleshooting Guide

There's nothing worse than waking up to a cold house because your boiler has packed in. Before you panic, there are a few things you can check yourself that might get your heating back on without needing to call an engineer.
Check the Thermostat
It sounds obvious, but check your thermostat is set correctly and the timer hasn't been changed. Battery-operated thermostats can stop working when the batteries die — swap them out and see if that fixes the issue.
Check the Pressure Gauge
Most modern boilers have a pressure gauge on the front. The needle should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar. If it's dropped below 1, your boiler may have locked out. You can repressurise it yourself using the filling loop — check your boiler manual for instructions specific to your model.
Look for Error Codes
If your boiler has a digital display, it may be showing an error code. Note this down — it tells the engineer exactly what's wrong and can speed up the repair. Common codes relate to pressure issues, ignition failure, or sensor faults.
Check the Condensate Pipe
During Belfast's cold winters, the condensate pipe (the plastic pipe that runs from your boiler to an outside drain) can freeze. This causes the boiler to shut down as a safety measure. Pouring warm water over the frozen section of pipe can sometimes thaw it enough to get the boiler running again.
When to Call a Professional
If none of these steps work, or if you smell gas, hear unusual noises, or see water leaking from the boiler, call a Gas Safe registered engineer immediately. Never attempt to open or repair the boiler yourself — this is dangerous and illegal if you're not qualified. Our team covers all of Belfast and can usually attend the same day.
